The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Roos are returning to Kansas City's historic Municipal Auditorium this November, bringing Roos basketball back to the heart of downtown for the 2026-27 season. To celebrate the homecoming, City Council presented university and athletics leadership with a special action on Thursday, October 29, recognizing UMKC Athletics as Kansas City's hometown Division I program. The move gives Roos Basketball a broader stage and creates more opportunities for the community to come together around Kansas City's college team.
"The Roos return to Municipal Auditorium brings Kansas City's basketball history and future together," said City Manager Mario Vasquez. "Basketball has always been a part of downtown. This is a tradition that celebrates our city in one of its most iconic destinations." Residents, students, alumni, and fans have an opportunity to show their Roo Blue pride while celebrating the university's longstanding connection to the venue. The UMKC men's basketball team played its first game at Municipal Auditorium in November 1987 before moving to the Swinney Center on the university's Volker Campus.
Municipal Auditorium also holds a special place in collegiate basketball history. The venue hosted the inaugural National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Basketball Tournament, then known as the NAIB. The tournament is the longest-running national collegiate championship in any sport, and Municipal continued that tradition this spring by hosting the 88th NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship.
"For 90 years, Municipal Auditorium has been home to unforgettable basketball moments, and we're proud to welcome UMKC's basketball program back home," said Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department Executive Director Kimiko Black Gilmore. "As Head Coach Mark Turgeon leads the Roos basketball team into a new chapter, the KC Streetcar makes it easier than ever for students, alumni and fans of all ages to experience these exciting times in the heart of Downtown Kansas City."
Ahead of the Roos return for the 2026-27 season, Municipal Auditorium received updates, including fresh paint and new collegiate branding throughout the venue, with work on the coaches' suite ongoing. The 2026 homecoming will bring together university and city leadership, students, alumni, and basketball fans for a doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 6 featuring UMKC's men's and women's basketball teams. The Roos women's basketball team kicks things off at 5:30 p.m. vs. Wichita State, and the men's basketball team will play Southern Illinois at 7:30 p.m.
"Returning to Municipal Auditorium is a proud moment for UMKC and for Kansas City," said UMKC Chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal. "As Kansas City's university, we're excited to bring our students, alumni and neighbors together in a venue that has played such an important role in our city's basketball history. We're grateful to the city for its partnership and look forward to a great season cheering on the Roos downtown."
The event is the first of many opportunities for students, alumni and fans to gather downtown and support Roo Basketball. The celebration begins at UMKC on 51st and Brookside with a pep rally from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. featuring music, games and giveaways before fans head downtown for the doubleheader. Attendees can then ride the KC Streetcar from the university into downtown, where they'll get a glimpse of the Convention Center Sky Stations lit up blue and yellow to celebrate the Roos return to downtown.
"As Kansas City's College Team, a strong relationship with our city is imperative," said Brandon Martin, vice chancellor for UMKC Athletics. "Between today's proclamation, our return to Municipal and our campus connection to downtown through the streetcar, it is clear that the City of Kansas City is invested in our Big Leap and our sustained excellence."
