Mohawk Valley Community College broke ground at its Utica Campus today for its new Applied Technology Center (ATC), a two-story, 63,760-square-foot building to house science and technology programs and address the region's major workforce gaps in enduring and emerging STEM fields and such sectors as semiconductor and advanced manufacturing. Its potential for transformational learning will have an extensive impact on students, employer partners, incumbent workers, apprentices, and pre-apprentices in the Mohawk Valley and across the state.
MVCC's new Applied Technology Center - made possible through funding from Oneida County, the State of New York, SUNY, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), and Fabmatics USA - was designed by MARCH Associates Architects & Planners as the new hub for science and technology education at the College. Environmental responsibility guides every design decision; the mass timber frame and ultra-high-performing concrete façade panels significantly lower the building's carbon footprint. Construction, led by Beebe Construction and Murnane Building Contractors, Inc., will begin later this fall in the footprint of an existing parking lot between Payne Hall and the Jorgensen Center. It is scheduled for completion by late December 2027.
"We are thrilled to break ground on the Applied Technology Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will empower our students to succeed in high-demand science and technology fields while meeting the workforce needs of our region," said MVCC President Dr. Randall J. VanWagoner. "This project is a true partnership, and we are deeply grateful to Oneida County, the State of New York, SUNY, Fabmatics for their generous support, and to Senator Schumer for his leadership with the FIPSE program. Together, we are investing in the future of our students, our community, and the economy of the Mohawk Valley."
"Oneida County's $18 million commitment to MVCC's Applied Technology Center is an investment in our people, our workforce and our future," said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. "This state-of-the-art facility will give our residents access to the skills and training needed to thrive in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors and other emerging industries that are driving growth in the Mohawk Valley. By supporting this project, we are ensuring that Oneida County remains at the forefront of innovation, economic development, and opportunity for generations to come."
The ATC will feature a modern double-height lobby with a feature staircase, highly visible glass-front laboratories, flexible learning and collaborative spaces, modern classrooms, meeting rooms, and a multipurpose area. Students will have access to industrial-grade training equipment and spaces that mirror the private sector in 16 specialized labs, including:
