The City of Frederick today announced that Chief Jason Lando has been selected as the next Chief of Police for the City of Pittsburgh - his hometown and the department where he began his law enforcement career.
Chief Lando joined the Frederick Police Department (FPD) in 2021 after more than two decades of service in Pittsburgh, where he rose through the ranks to commander before coming to Maryland. His return marks a homecoming and recognition of his leadership on a national scale.
"Chief Lando has been a transformational leader for Frederick," said Mayor Michael O'Connor. "He strengthened trust between officers and residents, expanded crisis response partnerships, and modernized operations to reflect the best of community policing. Pittsburgh's gain is our shared source of pride - this is an extraordinary recognition of his talent and of the culture of excellence we've built here in Frederick."
During his tenure, Chief Lando led the creation and expansion of the department's Crisis Response Team (CRT), advanced officer wellness programs, and leveraged partnerships and community members to transform public safety and community policing.
"Frederick has been an incredible place to serve," said Chief Lando. "The officers here care deeply about this community, and the residents have been amazing partners in building safer, stronger neighborhoods. I'm deeply grateful to Mayor O'Connor, the command staff, and the entire department for their support. Returning home to lead the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is both humbling and deeply personal - but I'll always carry the lessons and friendships from Frederick with me."
Chief Lando's last day with the City of Frederick will be Dec. 5. Prior to that date, Mayor O'Connor will announce an acting chief while the City begins a search for the department's next leader.
"With the excellent leadership and experience in our command staff, we know the department is in good hands during this transition," Mayor O'Connor said.
"Chief Lando leaves behind a department that is stronger, more connected, and more trusted than ever before. We are proud to have had him as part of our story, and we wish him great success as he returns home to lead the department that first inspired him."
