Winnipeg, MB- At 4:03 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 200 block of Johnson Avenue West. On-duty Winnipeg Police Service members first reported the fire and began evacuating neighbouring residents.
When WFPS crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters initially entered to fight the fire, but dangerous conditions forced them to exit. They switched to an exterior fire attack, using an aerial ladder and hand lines to apply water. Once conditions improved, crews went back inside to continue extinguishing the fire. The fire was declared under control at 6:21 a.m.
Firefighters searched the house and found no occupants. No injuries were reported.
Johnson Avenue West will remain closed through the morning as crews finish their work on scene.
Water from firefighting efforts is freezing and creating slippery conditions in the area. Once responders clear the scene, City crews will monitor the site and apply sand and de-icing materials to roads and sidewalks as needed.
The fire is under investigation. The house had been damaged in a previous fire in October 2022. Damage estimates are not available.
