Grand jury indicts Mexican illegal alien sex offender with illegally reentering United States

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Miguel Camarena-Salazar, 37, of Mexico, was taken into federal custody after being charged by a federal grand jury of felony reentry of a removed alien.

Camarena-Salazar is scheduled to appear in federal court today at 12:15pm for a detention hearing.

In February 2026, Camarena-Salazar was convicted of abduction in Delaware County, Ohio. Camarena-Salazar was sentenced to a term of imprisonment and is required to register as a sex offender under Ohio law. Earlier this month, a federal grand jury indicted Camarena-Salazar on the immigration offense before he finished his state prison sentence.

According to the federal indictment, Camarena-Salazar was previously removed from the United States on three prior occasions in August 2015, December 2015 and June 2016.

Illegally reentering the United States is a federal crime punishable by up to two years in prison.

Dominick S. Gerace II, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio; and Jeremy Pierczynski, Acting Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Detroit announced the charges. Assistant United States Attorney Justin C. Sheridan is representing the United States in this case.

An indictment merely contains allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
