June highlights National Lightning Safety Awareness Week (June 21-27, 2026) and the #SummerReady campaign on the national preparedness calendar. In Illinois, summer often begins with frequent thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and rising temperatures. These seasonal hazards, combined with increased outdoor activity and changing campus operations, make June an important time to focus on awareness and preparedness.
As the summer season begins, consider these key preparedness actions for June:
Stay prepared for lightning and summer storms
Lightning is a leading cause of weather-related injuries during the summer months. Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors. Seek shelter in a substantial building and wait at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder before returning outside.
Practice #SummerReady safety habits
Longer days and warmer weather often mean more time outdoors. Stay hydrated, take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and use sun protection. Recognize early signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness or fatigue.
Prepare for potential disruptions
Summer storms may cause power outages or service interruptions. Keep electronic devices charged, have flashlights accessible, and know how to report facility issues or outages within campus buildings.
Keep emergency alerts and communication tools updated
Turn on Wireless Emergency Alerts, sign up for ISU Emergency Alerts (students are automatically enrolled), download the Safe Redbirds app, and have multiple ways to receive emergency information - such as NOAA weather radios and local notification systems.
Preparedness starts with simple, everyday actions. Taking a few steps now helps keep the Redbird community safe and ready throughout the summer.
