India and Iceland held the 4th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Reykjavik on 23 March 2026. The Indian side was led by Shri Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs and the Icelandic side was led by H.E. Mr. Martin Eyolfsson, Permanent Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland. The last round of FOC was hosted by India in March 2023.
2. India and Iceland enjoy close and friendly relations marked by regular exchanges at both political and official levels which have intensified over the last years. The India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which entered into effect from 1 October 2025, has added a new dimension to the relations. Iceland is one of the four members of European Free Trade Area (EFTA).
3. During the FOC, both sides comprehensively reviewed the status of cooperation in all fields, including political, trade & investment, implementation of India-EFTA-TEPA, geothermal, fisheries, capacity building, culture and people-to-people ties. Both sides acknowledged the increase in bilateral trade in 2025 and investment by Icelandic companies in India. Detailed discussions were held on the future direction of cooperation, including in the multilateral fora particularly the UN.
4. The FOC also provided an opportunity to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest including developments in the neighbourhoods of India and Iceland. The sides underscored the importance of multilateral engagements and continued dialogue on global challenges.
5. During his visit to Reykjavik, Secretary (West) also called on Foreign Minister of Iceland H.E. Ms. Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and Speaker of Icelandic Parliament H.E. Ms. Þórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir. He also interacted with the Indian community in Reykjavik and appreciated their contributions in strengthening India-Iceland ties.
6. Both sides agreed to hold the next round of Foreign Office Consultations at a mutually convenient date in New Delhi.
