Des Moines, Iowa- Wednesday, January 21, 2026 - The City's Forestry Division is encouraging Des Moines residents and visitors to join its annual Treesure Hunt contest.
The scavenger hunt-style contest invites participants to explore the downtown skywalk, local parks, and Des Moines neighborhoods in search of hidden "Treesures." By photographing these treasures and submitting their entries, participants have the chance to win a free tree planting anywhere in Des Moines. Residents within city limits can even choose to have the tree planted on their own property.
"With the ups and downs of Iowa weather, the timing is perfect for our Treesure Hunt to offer both indoor and outdoor fun for everyone," said City Forester Shane McQuillan."Our team is just happy to help keep folks active while raising awareness around our urban forestry efforts."
The "Treesures" include three forestry-themed art installations throughout the downtown skywalk system, and four sets of actual park trees - one in each ward of the city - marked with pink ribbons. A bonus Treesure entry can be secured by photographing, and attempting to identify, any tree in Des Moines.
"With Treesures scattered city-wide, we included the bonus option to ensure everyone has a chance at playing arborist," McQuillan said.
The City's online tree inventory has most public trees mapped out, but private trees will require a bit of research on the participant's part. Bonus entries are accepted regardless of whether the species is correctly identified.
The Treesure Hunt runs through March 20. Participants will find QR codes leading to the entry form at all locations.
Participants can find more information about the Treesure Hunt, full contest rules and a printable Treesure map at DSM.city/TreesureHunt.
