Newsweek names Cal State LA one of America’s Top Online Colleges for 2026

Cal State LA has been named one of America's Top Online Colleges 2026 by Newsweek magazine and Statista, a global market research and consumer data firm.

The university was ranked No. 18 out of 250 institutions nationwide, earning a five-star rating and placing among the top five in California. This recognition reflects the university's leadership in delivering high-quality, student-centered online education.

"Our faculty and staff have intentionally designed engaging, digital learning environments that support persistence, achievement, and career readiness," said Heather Lattimer, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Cal State LA. "We're excited for the future of online education at Cal State LA, with greater presence and cohesion across our programs."

According to the National Center for Education Statistics-about 10 million college students took at least one online class in 2022, more than half of all college students nationwide-highlighting the continued growth and importance of virtual learning.

Jennifer H. Cunningham, editor-in-chief of Newsweek, noted that digital learning provides students and educators with greater flexibility and personalization than traditional educational settings.

She said, "Online students take a range of classes, from degree programs to those purely for professional or personal enrichment. As a result, virtual learning has seen incredible growth, especially in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic."

The ranking is based on an online survey of more than 10,000 students who have used online learning services either to obtain an academic degree or to further their knowledge and skills. Survey respondents rated their experiences in the areas of organization, support, price, reputation, success, and practical relevance.

At Cal State LA, the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning (CETL) serves as a national model for online instruction, combining evidence-based practices with a commitment to inclusive teaching and student success. Through a partnership with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), Cal State LA faculty members earn a nationally recognized ACUE Certificate in Effective College Instruction. CETL also provides intensive workshops to support the development of high-quality online courses.
