AIAC CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF ALAN GREENSPAN

The work traces his astronishing journey as a musical protegy to the chairmanship of the Federal Reserve, recalling his response to Black Monday in 1987, his eighteen years of service under four presidents, and his candor after the 2008 crisis, when he acknowledged that he had found a flaw in his thinking. It closes with a call to "weigh the man fair, with both wins and despair - neither idol nor villain was he," and a final line of remembrance: "Now the clarinet's gone, but his music lives on, in the hearts of the ones he has known."

Mr. Levie issued the following statement:

"Every generation inherits a ledger it did not write and a future it cannot yet see. Alan Greenspan spent a lifetime reading the one to brace us for the other. He came to Washington a man of evidence and left it a man of conscience: measured in his words, meticulous in his work, and modest in his certainty."

"When the markets plunged in the autumn of 1987, he moved with speed and steadiness, and the nation stood firm. For eighteen years, four presidents of both parties placed their faith in his judgment, prizing his patience, his prudence, and his plain devotion to the facts. And when the storm of 2008 tested his life's work, he faced history squarely and said he had found a flaw. There is no rarer courage than the courage to be corrected."

"Alan was a respected director of the Council on Foreign Relations, Vice Chairman and Trustee of the Economic Club of New York, and a Member of the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C. He was both a national and an international treasure, honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the France's Legion of Honour, and British knighthood conferred by Queen Elizabeth II. Like the storied E.F.Hutton, when Alan Greenspan spoke, people listened. I recall with deep fondness his wise words - measured, gentle, and always worth the wait. The Maestro has fallen silent, yet his music endures, in the institutions he steadied, the markets he calmed, the minds he moved, and the friendships he fostered."

"I join with her many friends whose hearts go out to Andrea Mitchell, the love of Alan's life. Her compassionate care sustained Alan in his final years, all while continuing her strenuous duties as among the most accomplished television journalists of our generation. Her steadfast devotion, her poise, and her calm under pressure are well known to all who know her. Andrea and Alan's 29-year marriage was a legendary love affair, born of a conversation about Social Security and nourished by a shared passion for ideas, for public life, for music, and for one another. We are all deeply sorry for her loss."

"I am deeply grateful to Michael Froman, Bob Rubin and David Rubenstein; to Roger Altman, Glenn Hubbard and Tim Geithner; and to the Council on Foreign Relations, for shining this well deserved spotlight on Alan Greenspan, the Maestro."

Mr. Levie is a Legacy Society Member of the Council on Foreign Relations; a Centennial Society Member of the Economic Club of New York; and a Member of the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., the Trilateral Commission, the Bretton Woods Committee, and the Yale CEO Summit. He is a Trustee of the Explorers Club and the Theodore Roosevelt Association. As Poet Laureate of The Explorers Club, Mr. Levie has composed poetic and musical tributes featured in ceremonies and celebrations at NASA, the United Nations, the U.S. Senate, the French Embassy in Washington D.C., The Union League Club of New York, The Explorers Club, the Economic Club of New York, the Metropolitan Club of New York, the Cosmos Club of Washington DC, and the University Club of Washington DC. He has composed and presented musical tributes honoring Warren Buffett, Mike Bloomberg, Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell, Sylvia Earle and Delta Air Lines at 100. His musical tributes were featured at New York memorial ceremonies for Jane Goodall and Ted Turner. For the nation's 250th anniversary, he composed musical tributes honoring the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty and Theodore Roosevelt.

Alan Greenspan

Alan Greenspan (1926-2026) served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1987 to 2006, under Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He died at his home in Washington, D.C., on June 22, 2026, at the age of 100.

Born in New York City on March 6, 1926, and raised in the Northern Manhattan neighborhood known as Washington Heights, he studied clarinet and saxophone at the Juilliard School and toured as a professional musician with Henry Jerome and His Orchestra, a swing music band, before turning to economics. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from New York University.

For nearly three decades he led Townsend-Greenspan & Co., an economic consulting firm in New York. He served as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Gerald Ford from 1974 to 1977, and from 1981 to 1983 chaired the National Commission on Social Security Reform, whose recommendations secured the program for decades.

Appointed Chairman of the Federal Reserve by President Reagan, he took office weeks before the stock market crash of October 19, 1987, and steadied the financial system with a pledge of liquidity. His tenure spanned one of the longest economic expansions in American history, and his carefully measured language earned him the title "the Maestro." After the 2008 financial crisis, he acknowledged to Congress that he had found a flaw in his view that markets would regulate themselves.

His honors include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by President George W. Bush in 2005; the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service (2006); the Gerald R. Ford Medal for Distinguished Public Service (2003), of which he was the first recipient; Commander of the Legion of Honour of France (2000); and an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, conferred by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. He wrote the memoir The Age of Turbulence (2007). He is survived by his wife, NBC News journalist Andrea Mitchell.
