Caltrans To Begin Activating New Ramp Meters On State Route 4/Crosstown Freeway In Stockton

Stockton - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing to activate newly-installed ramp meters along State Route 4/Crosstown Freeway (SR-4) in Stockton beginning Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Ramp meters on SR-4/Crosstown Freeway will be activated sequentially, beginning with westbound locations at Filbert Street (Aug. 26), Wilson Way (Sept. 2), Stanislaus Street (Sept. 9), and Center Street (Sept. 16). Eastbound locations are scheduled for El Dorado Street (Sept. 23), Stanislaus Street (Sept. 30), Wilson Way (Oct. 7), and Filbert Street (Oct. 14).

One week prior to final activation, each metered location will be in a "solid green" phase. These ramp meters are scheduled to be active Mondays through Fridays during peak commute hours from 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m., and from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Ramp metering is an effective traffic management strategy that uses traffic signals and accompanying equipment and techniques to manage the on-ramp flow of traffic to maintain an efficient freeway system, and protect the investment made in constructing freeways by keeping them operating optimally at-or-near capacity.
