SACRAMENTO, CA. - Today, Assemblymember Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) announced that local nonprofit San Diego Bird Alliance (SDBA) received $150,000 from Proposition 4 funds to support its work relating to biodiversity and nature-based climate solutions.
"San Diego's natural spaces are some of the prettiest in the state, which is why it is so important to protect these areas. It strengthens our climate resiliency, our region's ecological health, and supports wildlife," stated Assemblymember Boerner. "To continue to do the work our local partners are doing on the ground to support restoration of Rose Creek, they need help from the state, which is why I am so proud to secure $150,000 to ensure Friends of Rose Creek, the City of San Diego, and SDBA can continue their vital work for our region."
"We are the most biodiverse county in the nation, so there's a lot of work to do to protect and restore our wildlife habitat," says Muriel Spooner, the San Diego Bird Alliance Board President. "This support from Assemblymember Boerner helps us to invest in our streams, estuaries and shorelines for birds and our communities. Rose Creek is the largest source of freshwater to Mission Bay, it's a great corridor connection between the coast and the canyons, and it is the watershed for the ReWild Mission Bay coastal wetland restoration project. This grant enables us to organize the community to give back to this urban stream and watershed for the next three years. We are very grateful for Assemblymember Boerner's advocacy for this funding that allows us to continue our restoration work in Rose Creek."
In partnership with Friends of Rose Creek and the City of San Diego, SDBA will use the funding to remove invasive plant species such as arundo, castor bean, and fennel, to install native, pollinator-supporting plants like the California sagebrush, narrow-leaf milkweed, and other appropriate species.
The goal is to improve the surrounding habitat in the Rose Creek corridor and strengthen downstream ecological health in connected communities, as well as support biodiversity, improve ecosystem function, and contribute to the broader climate and habitat goals of Proposition 4.
