Tonight, the DNC congratulates Democratic candidate John Ewing Jr. on his victory in the Omaha mayoral race. With his win, Mayor-elect Ewing Jr. will become the first Black mayor of Omaha, and the first Democrat in more than a decade to secure the mayoral seat. With his historic win, Democrats further extend a significant streak of overperformances and victories in elections in 2025.
From the school board to city council, and now to the mayor's office, Nebraska voters are making their message heard loud and clear: They want strong Democratic leaders who will fight for them, protect their rights, and build opportunities within their communities. As Trump and his MAGA Republican allies continue to fail working families at every turn, voters are channeling their frustration into action at the voting booth. While Republicans alienate working- and middle-class families, Democrats continue to build momentum, win elections, and offer an alternative to Republicans' disastrous agenda.
In response to Ewing Jr.'s victory, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"Congratulations to Omaha Mayor-elect John Ewing Jr. on his historic mayoral victory in Nebraska. From coast to coast, from blue to purple to even red states, Democrats are overwhelmingly outperforming Republicans in nearly every election held this year - as voters condemn Republicans' plot to attack Social Security and health care while hiking prices on working families every chance they get. After tonight, vulnerable House Republicans like Don Bacon are on notice. Voters are sick of cowardly Republicans willing to bend the knee to Trump at their expense. They want true leaders who will govern on behalf of working families and not billionaire donors, which is why Democrats like John Ewing Jr. are winning elections up and down the ballot."
ASDC President and Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party Jane Kleeb released the following statement:
"Tonight, John Ewing Jr. made history as the first African American mayor in Omaha. Ewing's victory rings in a new era for Omaha and the entire state of Nebraska. Tonight's victory comes on the heels of Nebraska Democrats sweeping local elections last week in Lincoln and proves what we already know: Voters are sick of Republicans' one-party rule and endless attacks on working families. Nebraskans are demanding change. As a public servant for 43 years, Mayor-elect Ewing's commitment to the people of the great state of Nebraska speaks for itself, and I have no doubt that Omaha's future is bright under his leadership. My fellow Nebraskans: We made historic progress tonight, and tomorrow, the hard work continues on as we look to 2026. Democrats are here to do the work for the people."
