28-Hour Full Freeway Closure Scheduled on Northbound
Capital City Freeway at American River Bridge
Closures Include On- and Off-Ramps Along the Work Area
SACRAMENTO - Caltrans is alerting motorists of a scheduled 28-hour full closure on northbound Capital City Freeway (State Route 51/Business 80) from 11 p.m. Friday, May 29 to 3 a.m. Sunday, May 31 as part of the $239.5 million American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
Northbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 will be closed from N Street to Exposition Boulevard. Crews will be applying a polyester concrete overlay on the bridge deck. The extended closure is necessary due to the curing process required for polyester concrete. Southbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 will remain open.
Ramp/connector closures include: Northbound P Street on-ramp, Northbound J Street on-ramp, Northbound E Street on-ramp, eastbound U.S. Highway 50 to northbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 connector, westbound U.S. Highway 50 to nothbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 connector.
Caltrans advises motorists to use alternate routes and avoid the area.
Work is scheduled to begin as listed but is subject to change due to weather, traffic incidents, availability of equipment and/or materials, or other construction-related issues.
This project includes $236.8 million in funding from the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP); and $2.7 million from the Active Transportation Program (ATP) to replace the bridge deck, install sheet piles around piers for reinforcement, and add a Class I bike path to connect to the existing American River bike path for increased mobility.
