DOE national battery strategy and manufacturing accelerator will support American battery innovation and industrial competitiveness
Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation
October 28, 2026WASHINGTON-The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI) today announced DOE's national battery strategy and a new partnership to strengthen American leadership in advanced battery technologies, expand domestic manufacturing capabilities, and secure domestic supply chains. These efforts will support American innovation, create new opportunities for American jobs, and advance President Trump's reindustrialization agenda.
DOE's Strategy for American Leadership in Batteries establishes the Department's priorities to build a fully integrated domestic battery supply chain by 2030, achieve U.S. leadership in battery technology and manufacturing by 2035, and accelerate the commercialization of safe, affordable, and reliable energy-storage solutions.
"From transportation and power grids to medical devices and consumer electronics, batteries are essential to modern life," said Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson. "DOE's national strategy demonstrates the Trump Administration's commitment to accelerating American battery innovation, onshoring manufacturing, and securing the supply chains we need to power our economy and maintain American energy dominance."
U.S. battery demand across transportation and energy-storage applications is projected to nearly quadruple, increasing from 179 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2025 to 707 GWh in 2035. Meeting this demand presents a significant opportunity to expand domestic manufacturing, strengthen America's industrial base, and create new workforce opportunities.
DOE's strategy identifies six strategic pillars: 1) targeting investments in the upstream and midstream supply chain steps; 2) accelerating commercial deployment of laboratory discoveries; 3) prioritizing manufacturing process innovation; 4) targeting mission-driven deployment for grid modernization; 5) coordinating on the national strategy with international partners; 6) and investing in American talent.
To advance DOE's battery manufacturing priorities, CMEI has launched the Battery Manufacturing Accelerator (BattMan), a national consortium of DOE National Laboratories, industry partners, and academic institutions focused on addressing critical barriers in scaling new battery technologies. The accelerator will focus on lowering manufacturing costs, speeding the transition of novel battery technologies from laboratory discovery to manufacturing deployment, and boosting U.S. leadership in energy storage manufacturing. BattMan's work will harness Super Intelligence (SI) and advanced manufacturing capabilities to identify challenges earlier and improve production processes. The accelerator will also strengthen critical mineral supply chains by advancing battery materials made from more abundant domestic elements. This will reduce battery production costs, shorten commercialization timelines, and fortify America's battery manufacturing sector.
The Battery Manufacturing Accelerator consortium is supported by CMEI's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office and led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Organizations interested in collaborating with the Accelerator can visit the BattMan site to learn more.
