Amo & Experts Help Seniors Avoid Scams in Kickoff to Fighting for an Affordable America Stops

Lincoln, RI - TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) hosted a panel featuring anti-scam experts to educate older Rhode Islanders on how to avoid scams and keep their hard-earned money from being stolen by bad actors. The experts shared ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from fraudsters, and Congressman Amo shared what he's doing in Congress to stop the proliferation of scams.

"A key part of making life more affordable is ensuring that as much of your money as possible stays in your pocket," said Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI). "With costs on the rise because of Trump's illegal war with Iran and erratic tariffs, scammers are worsening financial strain by taking advantage and targeting well-meaning Rhode Islanders already affected by Republicans' affordability crisis. By bringing together law enforcement, elder justice advocates, and financial experts, we were able to provide critical resources to older Rhode Islanders about how to avoid scams. As a founding co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Stop Scams Caucus, I will keep fighting to stop the scam scourge and pass commonsense legislation like my STOP Scams Against Seniors Act and my National Strategy to Combat Scams Act to make sure that Rhode Islanders ' hard-earned money stays right where it belongs."

Background

Congressman Amo is a founding co-chair of the Congressional Stop Scams Caucus, a bipartisan group of Members of Congress dedicated to protecting Americans from scams.

Amo introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Strengthening Task Forces to Oppose Predatory (STOP) Scams Against Seniors Act, which would authorize the creation of Elder Justice Task Forces to help local, state, and Federal agencies work together to investigate and prosecute illegal scammers. The bill is co-led by Congressman Jeffersen Shreve (R-IN) in the House and led by Senator Ashley Moody (R-FL) in the Senate.

Amo also introduced the bipartisan, bicameral National Strategy for Combating Scams Act, which would establish a federal working group led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to coordinate the efforts of more than a dozen federal agencies in combating scams. The bill is co-led by Congressman Derek Schmidt (R-KS) in the U.S. House. Companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Rick Scott (R-FL), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Ashley Moody (R-FL).
