São Paulo, May 26, 2026 - Today, Netflix released the official trailer and poster for The Root of the Game , a documentary series premiering June 20. It explores São Paulo's grassroots soccer scene, where dreams and talent are born, and where some of Brazilian soccer's biggest names first emerged. With all-new behind-the-scenes access to the Super Copa Pioneer, São Paulo's largest and most prestigious grassroots soccer tournament, the series features gritty and unfiltered soccer played in the mud. Here, rivalries between neighborhood teams galvanize entire communities, transform lives, and keep alive one of the most authentic expressions of Brazilian culture.
Throughout the series, stars such as Cafu and Raphinha revisit their beginnings and reflect on how dirt pitches, their communities and their passion for grassroots soccer shaped their journeys to global success. They also reveal how this world extends beyond soccer, as a symbol of belonging, pride and resilience. The Root of the Game is a Ginga Pictures production, in partnership with R21, for Netflix and is directed by Alec Cutter.
