On April 21, Ambassador Hou Yue visited Longyearbyen, the administrative capital of Svalbard, and met with Governor Lars Fause.
Ambassador Hou noted that China-Norway relations have maintained sound and steady development with smooth cooperation between the two sides in areas including polar scientific research. Guided by the principles of respect, cooperation, win-win results and sustainability, China has participated in Arctic affairs and committed to understanding, protecting and developing the Arctic, as well as participating in the governance of the Arctic. Ambassador Hou thanked Norway for its long-standing support for China's Arctic Yellow River Station, and expressed China's readiness to further deepen Arctic scientific research cooperation with Norway to deliver greater benefits to the international community.
Governor Fause said that Norway aims to build Svalbard into a key platform for international polar research cooperation. He commended the fruitful outcomes achieved by scientists from both countries, and looked forward to closer cooperation with China and other nations to jointly address common challenges such as climate change.
During her stay in Longyearbyen, Ambassador Hou also visited the Svalbard Research Office, the University Centre in Svalbard and Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
