WILMINGTON - In the spirit of transparency and in alignment with our commitment to only share accurate and verifiable information, we are sharing additional details that WPD was able to confirm today. We know that questions remain, we do not have all the answers, but we are committed to pursuing the truth.
While this incident remains under active investigation by the Wilmington Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division and Office of Professional Standards, as well as the Delaware Department of Justice, the Wilmington Police Department we can now share a few details.
An investigation conducted by the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences determined that Kadir Skinner sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper left buttocks area.
Following the shooting, and once it was discovered that Skinner had been injured, a police officer on scene transported him to the hospital in an attempt to seek medical care.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police officers on scene recovered a firearm - a loaded .45-caliber handgun with an extended magazine - in addition to ballistic evidence. All materials were provided to forensic technicians for analysis and preservation as part of the ongoing investigations being conducted by WPD and the independent investigation by the Delaware Department of Justice.
As a follow-up to the June 25th meeting that previously took place between family members and Chief Wilfredo Campos, WPD extended an offer for the family to see the body-worn camera footage. The offer remains open for them to accept at any time they are ready.
This is an ongoing investigation and further information will be released when possible. We ask the public to have patience and allow the investigation to continue so there can be a thorough account of events.
