A husband-and-wife duo of Merseyside Police Community Support Officers teamed up on their rest day with RAF cadets - 7F (1st City of Liverpool) Squadron RAF Air Cadets and local councillors to take part in a community litter-picking operation in Kirkby, demonstrating a shared commitment to keeping local neighbourhoods safe, clean and welcoming.
The joint effort saw volunteers working side by side to clear litter from streets and green spaces across the area. During the clean-up, PCSOs discovered and safely disposed of more than 30 cans of nitrous oxide, helping to remove potentially harmful waste from public spaces.
The initiative highlighted the positive partnership between young people and local policing teams, with the enthusiastic RAF cadets showing community spirit and civic pride while supporting PCSOs in practical action on the ground.
Andrew Robinson, Kirkby Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, said: "I think it's incredibly important we support and celebrate young people when they're giving-back to their community. Having Neighbourhood PCSOs give up their Sunday to do that shows me that my staff and officers share that feeling.
"Young people, especially where antisocial behaviour is concerned, often come under a lot of criticism. These RAF cadets have been out almost every weekend picking litter, supporting community events. It's brilliant.
"While there's work to be done around anti-social behaviour in Kirkby, there's so much good going on, too. I'd like to thank these young people and my staff for volunteering to help make our area a better place."
Residents passing by thanked the group for their efforts, with many welcoming the visible commitment to improving the local environment.
The organisers hope the successful litter pick will encourage others to get involved in future community clean-up events and continue working together to keep Kirkby clean and safe for everyone.
