FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash.- San Juan Island National Historical Park will begin controlled pile burning and hazardous fuels removal the week of April 6 in two areas of the park to reduce wildfire risk. Operations will be led by Olympic Interagency Fire Management personnel.
Work will include pile burning of woody debris at Mitchell Hill in the English Camp unit and establishing a fire break along the western boundary of American Camp near the Eagle Cove neighborhood bordering the park.
At Mitchell Hill, crews will burn piles of woody debris from previous thinning work to reduce wildfire intensity and improve forest resilience. At American Camp, crews will establish a fire break to help slow or stop the spread of wildfire and protect park resources and nearby homes.
Burn operations at Mitchell Hill are expected to begin on April 6 and conclude April 10, weather permitting. Smoke may be visible from nearby roads and trails during operations. Fire crews will remain onsite to monitor and manage the fires until they are secured.
Burning the debris will reduce hazardous fuels, create defensible spaces, and decrease the risk of wildfire impacts. It is the most convenient and cost-effective method for disposal.
At American Camp, crews will use heavy machinery, chainsaws, and other mechanical equipment, which may generate loud noise. A section of the trail leading to Eagle Cove will be temporarily closed during operations. Eagle Cove Road may be used by fire crews to access the project area. No impacts on residential areas are expected. Updates will be posted on the park's website and social media platforms throughout the project.
