WASHINGTON, D.C. -Today, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) praised the Biden Administration's decisive actions to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for vulnerable populations from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan-all nations experiencing severe instability. These measures provide critical protection for families fleeing violence, economic collapse, war and natural disasters, allowing them to remain safe and contribute to their communities in the United States.
For Venezuelans, many in Florida, the extension of TPS for 18 months answers Rep. Castor's call for action due to the ongoing economic and political crises caused by the Maduro regime. Venezuelan neighbors can continue to legally work, support families and contribute to America while the corrupt Maduro regime continues its cruel and violent downward spiral. Castor urged President Biden and DHS Sec. Mayorkas to extend TPS for Venezuelan neighbors in a letter last month.
"Families who have endured unimaginable hardships now have a lifeline," said Rep. Kathy Castor. "For our neighbors from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan, Temporary Protected Status offers safety, stability and an opportunity to rebuild their lives. This is about fairness and humanity-ensuring that people can live and work without fear while continuing to enrich the communities they call home. President Biden's decision reflects our country's values: compassion, resilience and the promise of opportunity for all."
For Salvadorans, the reinstatement of TPS addresses the violence, natural disasters and instability that make returning unsafe. For Ukrainians, the continuation of TPS recognizes the ongoing impacts of Russia's invasion, including war and displacement, which have left millions unable to return safely. For Sudanese, the continuation of TPS reflects the ongoing armed conflict that prevents individuals from safely returning home.
America must remain steadfast in her commitment to democracy and in advancing solutions that promote dignity, safety and opportunity for all.
