Janne Känkänen, Bachelor of Social Sciences, has been appointed Director General of the National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) for the period of 1 May 2026-30 April 2031.
Känkänen has served as NESA's Chief Executive Officer since 1 September 2020. Prior to that, he worked in various positions at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and its predecessor, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, beginning in 2005. In 1996-2005 Känkänen was Policy Officer at the European Commission.
The new security of supply legislation entered into force on 1 April 2026. Both the Security of Supply Act and the Security Stockpiling Act have been reformed. As a result of this reform, NESA became an agency. Due to this change, NESA will be able to better meet the requirements of a changed security environment while the agency's status as an authority will be clarified. The agency is led by a director general. Before the reform, NESA was headed by a chief executive officer.
NESA is key government agency operating in the government branch of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The National Emergency Supply Agency supports the authorities, organisations and business and industry in maintaining and improving security of supply. In addition, it plans and implements preparedness measures to safeguard security of supply in case of serious incidents in normal conditions and in emergency conditions.
The Director General is responsible for the development and effectiveness of the agency's operations as well as the achievement of its objectives.
