Construction is underway on Southern University's campus for the Global Innovation and Welcome Center, a state-of-the-art facility set to host both internal and external large-scale events.
The new complex, located on Harding Boulevard near the security checkpoint, will house the university's Traffic and ParkingdDepartment as well as the Office of Research and Strategic Planning.
Southern University Chancellor John Pierre expressed his enthusiasm for the project.
"What's unique about it is that it's right at the very front of campus, so it really becomes an emblem of what the campus is all about," Pierre told WVLA/WGMB. "It symbolizes that we're growing and we're thriving in the 21st century, and after 145 years, we're still growing on the Bluff."
The facility is expected to accommodate up to 750 people.
The project is funded by a grant from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). Construction is currently in phase one, with phase two scheduled to begin in late 2025.
