The Cameron University Concert Band and Lawton Community Band will join forces for a spring musical event planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29, in the University Theatre on CU's Lawton campus.
The bands are under the direction of CU assistant music professor Cy Miessler.
The Lawton Community Band will open the concert with "Parallax" by Leland Forsblad, an exciting fanfare-like opener, followed by the classic John Philip Sousa march, "The Fairest of the Fair." Randall Standridge's beautiful "Gently Blows the Summer Wind" is next, before the band closes its portion of the program with the intense and driving "Fortress" by Frank Ticheli.
The CU Concert Band opens its segment with the famous "Entrance of the Gladiators" by Julius Fucik, followed by Dakota Pederson's "Ambush," a relentlessly violent - yet beautiful - piece that incapsulates the feeling of war and victory.
The group will move forward with "Pablo!" - a tribute to Pablo Picasso's life - by Richard Meyer, and a beautiful rendition of "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" by Claude Debussy, arranged by Chris Bernotas. Next will be a nod to funk music with David Biedenbender's "Melodious Thunk," and finally "Fanfare and Allegro" by Clifton Williams, a triumphant and exciting piece with blasting trumpets, roaring brass and swirling woodwinds.
The two ensembles will then combine for a performance of Samuel Hazo's stunningly beautiful "Perthshire Majesty." The night ends with a bang with the bombastic "Haunted Objects" by John Mackey, an unforgettable explosion of sound that is sure to send the crowd home exhilarated.
The concert is open to all. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for military with proper identification, seniors and students in grades K-8. Cameron students, faculty and staff are admitted free by showing valid CU identification.
Tickets can be reserved by calling 580-581-2346. The CU Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., but will be closed for the week of March 16 due to spring break. Tickets can also be purchased online at https://www.cameron.edu/art-music-and-theatre/events/buy-tickets.
