WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29) released the following statement following the Supreme Court's ruling to void two majority Black congressional districts in Louisiana and weaken Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a critical provision that prohibits racial discrimination in voting policies and district maps:
"What Donald Trump, his handpicked Supreme Court, and Republicans in Congress are doing to undermine the Voting Rights Act is a horrid attack on voting rights. The Supreme Court's ruling will have harmful reverberating consequences for the future of our democracy.
"Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act is instrumental to ensuring Black, Brown, and minority communities across the country have fair representation in government. We must use every tool at our disposal to counter the threat Trump and Republicans pose to democracy - and that includes passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the protections in the Voting Rights Act.
