The Flagship Awards are part of the Port Clinton City School District's recognition program, designed to honor parents, community members, and staff who help the district realize its motto of "Proudly Charting a Course for Success." During the March 9 meeting, the Port Clinton Board of Education awarded Flagship Awards in two of the three categories: Captain for staff, First Mate for parents, and Crew for the community. The Port Clinton Board of Education recognized the following individuals with Flagship Awards.
Kerry Fial, Captain Award: Kerry Fial, an educator at Port Clinton Middle School, was awarded the Flagship Captain Award for her exceptional dedication. In addition to teaching language arts and advising the Young Entrepreneurs Club, Fial leads the Middle School Academic Challenge Team and coaches track.
Fial is a key supporter of the athletic department, assisting at every middle school volleyball game and working all girls' and boys' basketball games. Athletic Director Alex Sheridan notes her willingness to take on roles beyond her duties, such as taking tickets, running the scoreboard, and working concessions. On one occasion, she even purchased and supplied bottled water for the concession stand out of her own pocket.
Her enthusiasm for her students is evident, as she often assists students with homework while selling tickets. Fial's positive and friendly demeanor makes a lasting impression on community members and visiting fans. The Board of Education honored her commitment and contributions with a Flagship Captain Award.
Connie Roe, Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center, Crew Award: Ottawa County Family Advocacy (OCFAC) is dedicated to helping families navigate daily challenges. They manage the Ottawa County Summer Lunch program, providing essential meals and activities to children in Ottawa County. The program has expanded to offer grab-and-go meals during summer and school breaks.
The TNT Mentoring program connects adult mentors with students in Ottawa County public schools, supporting numerous students. The Grand Love Program aids grandparents and family members raising children, benefiting many families. As Director, Connie Roe is at the heart of all these programs, stepping in whenever necessary to help families in crisis, including a devasting house fire earlier this year.
These initiatives demonstrate OCFAC's commitment to family well-being and positive community impact. For their contributions to Port Clinton students and families, Roe and OCFAC were honored with a Flagship Crew Award.
The Port Clinton City School District is committed to recognizing and celebrating the individuals who go above and beyond to support the district's mission and the growth of its students.
