Grenada and EU strengthen partnership at Global Gateway Forum

President Ursula von der Leyen met with Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada during the Global Gateway Forum. The meeting reaffirmed the European Union's strong and forward-looking partnership with Grenada, built on shared values, mutual trust, and joint ambitions for sustainable growth and climate resilience.

Through Global Gateway, the EU and its partners are offering over €300 million in potential loans and €60 million in potential grants to support Grenada and the wider Caribbean region. These investments will focus on renewable energy, climate resilience, and sustainable infrastructure, reinforcing Grenada's sustainable development priorities and regional connectivity.

At the Forum, Grenada and the European Union will announce a concrete roadmap to deliver the Grenada Sargassum Valorisation initiative, a flagship initiative under Global Gateway. The aim is to enable the collection, storage, and processing of 10,000 tons of sargassum by 2026, turning the algae from an environmental challenge into an economic opportunity. The Roadmap builds on the Expression of Interest launched earlier this year, which attracted multiple private-sector proposals.

The initiative illustrates how Global Gateway supports innovation and mobilises investment in response to shared environmental and economic challenges. The Global Gateway Forum was preceded by the 3rd EU-Caribbean Conference on 8 October, where Grenada highlighted progress since the previous meeting, including efforts to attract private investment into sargassum management across the full value chain.

EU-Grenada partnership

The European Union and Grenada are working together to strengthen sustainable and inclusive development, and climate resilience. Through Global Gateway, we are investing in green growth and jobs, economic resilience, tackling sargassum, human development, governance and trade.

Global Gateway Forum

The Global Gateway Forum brings together leaders from the European Union and across the globe, alongside key stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, thought leaders, financial institutions, and international organisations to promote global investment in infrastructure - hard and soft - to deliver on the SDGs and sustainable growth and resilience worldwide.

Global Gateway

Global Gateway is the EU's positive offer to reduce the worldwide investment disparity and boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems.

The Global Gateway strategy embodies a Team Europe approach that brings together the European Union, EU Member States, and European development finance institutions. Together, we aim to mobilise up to €300 billion in public and private investments from 2021 to 2027, creating essential links rather than dependencies, and closing the global investment gap.
