A summer day, framed by a GRDA high-voltage transmission structure, used to carry abundant, reliable electricity to customers. In late March, GRDA learned it was once again being recognized for exceptional electric reliability, by the American Public Power Association (APPA).
The Grand River Dam Authority is receiving national recognition for its exceptional electric reliability. That recognition comes from the American Public Power Association (APPA), a trade group that represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities.
On March 31, APPA announced that GRDA was among the nation's publicly owned electric utilities being recognized, based on APPA's eReliability Tracker service. APPA tracks power outage and restoration data through the service and then compares that data to national statistics, tracked by the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Nationwide, the average customer of a publicly owned electric utilty has their lights out for less than half the time, compared to other types of utilities.
"This recognition reflects the efforts of our team to maintain reliability," said GRDA President/Chief Executive Officer Dan Sullivan. "This is the public power standard as well as the commitment GRDA has made to its customers. Reliability remains a top GRDA priority."
GRDA received the recognition for its reliability record among its distribution customers in the MidAmerica Industrial Park. Based on EIA data, GRDA ranks in the top quartile (25 percent) of utilities for System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI).
GRDA has received this recognition six times in the last nine years. APPA has also designated GRDA as a platinum level Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) utility by APPA.
In an APPA release, Jeremy Ash, Chair of APPA's RP3 Review Panel and General Manager at Kansas City Board of Public Utilities said "Receiving an RP3 designation is a great honor and a testament to the work these utilities are doing to follow industry best practices. These designees have distinguished themselves as committed to pursuing excellence and perpetual improvement for the benefit of their communities."
GRDA is Oklahoma's largest public power electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. Each day, GRDA strives to be an "Oklahoma agency of excellence" by focusing on the 5 E's: electricity, economic development, environmental stewardship, employees, and efficiency.
