Getting to Know: Provost Debbie Tahmassebi

Dr. Debbie Tahmassebi was named provost and executive vice president for academic affairs in December and began in her role in March. The organic chemist and former provost at Westminster University took a few minutes to talk with Marquette Today about her love for the outdoors, the importance of a supportive team of colleagues and her early skills at the free throw line.

Hometown: I was born in New York City and moved to San Diego when I was 11. I spent most of my life in San Diego, which is the city that I consider to be home.

Tell us about your family: My husband Sam and I met as undergraduates at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and will be married for 35 years this August. We have two daughters, Layla and Roya. We have two dogs, Torshi and Tadig.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests?

I grew up on the beach, and I love the water and mountains. I enjoy walking, reading and traveling. I like watching and playing sports (especially watching the U.S. women's national soccer team).

What are your favorite movies?

I'm not sure that I have one favorite, but I really like "Cinema Paradiso."

Any favorite quotes/mottos?

There is no love possible without trust and respect.

What are you currently reading?

"Trust" by Hernan Diaz

Tahmassebi's love of travel and the outdoors has brought her to views like this in Bryce Canyon, Utah.

Any favorite vacation spots?

I love vacations and travel, so I have lots - some favorites are Rome and Barcelona (international), Seattle/Portland and national parks in general more locally.

What was your biggest career learning experience?

I worked in a very committed and ambitious department as a faculty member. Early on, I learned the value of a strong support network of colleagues who both challenged and supported each other in healthy and productive ways.

Any fun facts people should know about you?

I played on a boys basketball rec team in middle school (not enough girls interested in playing for a girls team). As a teenager, I won a women's free throw shooting contest at halftime during the Clippers (who played in San Diego at the time) game. Sadly, those skills are long gone - but, I still appreciate and enjoy watching basketball.

What most excites you about being at Marquette?

Marquette is an excellent university with top-notch students, faculty, and staff with a strong commitment to its mission and place in the community. I'm excited to be part of its future.
