Following the AMATS Policy Committee Meeting last week, Assembly Vice Chair Meg Zaletel announced a press conference tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 1:00PM. Joined by Assembly Members Karen Bronga and Daniel Volland, the members will review a resolution they intend to lay on the table during the September 24 Regular Assembly Meeting.

As of today, there have been 12 pedestrian deaths within the Municipality this year, nearly eclipsing the statewide record of 13 pedestrian deaths in 2022. Acknowledging that pedestrian deaths are 100% preventable, the resolution declares October as Pedestrian Safety Month and calls forthe Municipality of Anchorage and the State of Alaska to take the following actions in corridors where pedestrian deaths have occurred:
1. Immediately install improved lighting as used by the HSIP program;
2. Lower speed limits by at least 10mph, not to exceed 35 mph;
3. Produce a public education campaign about the impact of speed on pedestrian safety.

Meg Zaletel represents District 4, Midtown Anchorage, serves as Assembly Vice Chair and sits on the AMATS Policy Committee.
