Sen. Scott hosts Black History Month fireside chat on economic opportunity and housing

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) hosted a Black History Month program featuring a fireside chat with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner on economic opportunity, housing affordability, and driving investment in historically underserved communities. The program highlighted the impact of Opportunity Zones and market-driven solutions, including the ROAD to Housing Act, as part of a broader policy-to-product pipeline connecting policy, capital, and community revitalization.

"This month, we celebrate Black history not just by reflecting on the past but by creating opportunity for the future. Today's discussion with Secretary Turner was about more than policy - it was about connecting ideas, capital, and communities to unlock real economic growth," said Sen. Scott. "By empowering entrepreneurs, expanding housing access, and driving investment in neighborhoods that need it most, we can give families the tools to build wealth, create jobs, and strengthen communities. Black History Month is a reminder that honoring our history also means taking bold action to ensure every American has the chance to thrive."

The fireside chat also explored how public-private partnerships and innovative investment strategies can unlock growth in areas that have historically lacked access to capital, helping families build wealth and create generational impact. Sen. Scott stressed that policies encouraging entrepreneurship, small business development, and housing access are key to building stronger, more resilient communities across the country.
