Lorain County Schools Recognized as Science of Reading Champions

COLUMBUS-State Representative Gayle Manning (R-Avon) is pleased to announce that seven elementary schools located in Lorain County were recently recognized by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce as 2026 Science of Reading Champions.

The awards were distributed based on schools' commitment to the Science of Reading to improve student engagement and literacy outcomes. The 2026 Science of Reading Champions from the 52nd House District include:

  • Powers Elementary School (Amherst, Ohio)
  • Avon East Elementary School (Avon, Ohio)
  • Copopa Elementary School (Columbia Station, Ohio)
  • North Ridgeville Early Childhood Learning Community (North Ridgeville, Ohio)
  • Westwood Elementary School (Wellington, Ohio)
  • Midview North Elementary School (Grafton, Ohio)
  • Midview West Elementary School (Grafton, Ohio)

"Literacy instruction not only contributes to the education of students, but their overall health and well-being, ensuring the long-term success of our children," said Manning.

The Science of Reading is a method used to teach students how to read by focusing on how to sound out and understand words.

In total, 109 schools throughout the state received the 2026 Governor's Science of Reading Champions Award.
