A new report submitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) reveals that India continues to be the poster child of a wildly distorted world sugar market.
In 2025, India provided nearly $18 BILLION in subsidies to its sugar producers.
Those subsides are "vastly in excess of the [WTO] limits," according to the report. More alarmingly, India INCREASED those subsidies after a similar report was submitted to the WTO by the U.S. government in 2024.
Foreign sugar subsidies tilt the global playing field and harm American farmers and workers. "[A]s the world's second-largest sugar producer and third-largest sugar exporter, dynamics in India's sugar market have significant implications for both prices and trade in the global market," the report notes.
The world sugar market is increasingly distorted due to subsidization and government intervention. India's increasing sugar subsidies are just another example of why policymakers need to take action to modernize U.S. trade policies.
Defend American farmers and workers. Don't offshore American sugar production.
