Baker McKenzie’s Lothar Determann Publishes Sixth Edition of California Privacy Law Guide with the IAPP

Partner Lothar Determann has released the Sixth Edition of his authoritative handbook, California Privacy Law, published by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). The newly updated guide, current as of January 1, 2026, offers practical guidance and in depth commentary on every major US federal and California state privacy law.

Readers of prior editions have praised the guide as "a must have reference book for any legal department" and "the definitive account of California policymakers' weighty contribution to privacy law." The new edition covers key developments including the newly finalized California Consumer Privacy Act regulations on automated decision making, risk assessments, and cybersecurity audits, as well as updated guidance on cookies and advertising technologies. It also reflects new federal data transfer restrictions, changes to breach notification timing, and recently enacted California and federal privacy statutes, offering readers a concise but current view of the rapidly evolving landscape.

Based in Palo Alto, Lothar advises clients on data privacy law compliance, information technology, artificial intelligence, copyrights, product regulations and international commercial law. Lothar also teaches at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and is the author of six books and more than 180 articles on privacy, technology, and law.

California Privacy Law, Sixth Edition, is available from the IAPP.

Lothar has also recently expanded the global reach of his other leading works. His Field Guide to Data Privacy Law is now available in Greek, extending access to practical privacy guidance to international audiences. He has also released French and Turkish editions of his Field Guide to Artificial Intelligence Law, reflecting rising worldwide demand for clear, actionable analyses of emerging AI regulations.
