From 16 to 20 February 2026, experts from Eurostat, UNECE and EFTA, represented by Statistics Norway, conducted a peer review in Chișinău of the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the overall National Statistical System.
This mission formed part of EFTA's technical cooperation work programme in the field of statistics for 2026, approved by the EFTA Council at its first meeting of 2026.
The objective of peer reviews is to assess and monitor compliance with and implementation of the European Statistics Code of Practice (ESCoP), with a view to assisting national statistical institutes and other statistical authorities with developing, producing and disseminating high-quality official statistics. Peer reviews also help identify areas that need additional support, and provide recommendations for further improving compliance with the ESCoP and ultimately the quality of national official statistics.
During the mission in Moldova, the peer review team held a series of meetings with the producers and main user groups of official statistics. The aim of these meetings was to assess the different experiences in complying with the principles and indicators set out in the ESCoP, as well as to gather users' views on several topics such as data availability and confidentiality, collaboration and resource allocation.
The experts will now compile a detailed report with recommendations for future improvements for Moldova to consider on its path to EU accession. The final report, including possible comments on recommendations from Moldova, will be published on EFTA's website.
Adopted by the European Statistical System Committee in 2005 with the participation of the EFTA States, the ESCoP sets out 16 principles and 84 indicators covering the institutional environment, statistical processes and statistical output of data production. These principles and indicators ensure that European official statistics are professionally independent, objective, reliable, comparable and accessible to all users.
