The CARICOM Crime Gun Intelligence Unit Holds Training Workshop
NASSAU, The Bahamas - The annual CARICOM Crime Gun Intelligence Unit (CGIU) Training Workshop commenced here in the capital at the Paul Farquharson Police Headquarters on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Established in October 2022, the CARICOM Crime Gun Intelligence Unit is a relatively new organization forged between CARICOM States and the United States of America. It has proven highly effective in analyzing firearms crime trends, assisting member states in investigations, and facilitating cooperation with U.S. agencies to enhance regional security.
The Ministry of National Security, the Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and the United States' Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs are hosting the three-day training workshop.
Deputy Executive Director of CARICOM IMPACS, Tonya Ayow, spoke about the regional significance of the workshop and the importance of the established alliance between CARICOM Member States in combating cross-border firearms trafficking.
US Ambassador, His Excellency Hershel Walker brought remarks sharing enthusiasm for the unwavering support and cooperation between the US and The Bahamas regarding law enforcement and security matters.
The Minister of National Security for The Bahamas, the Hon. Myles LaRoda, addressed continued plans to stop gun trafficking in his keynote address.
The National Security Minister explained how illegal guns are heavily impacting communities in The Bahamas and detailed the innovative, futuristic approach the government is implementing to stop the infiltration of these illegal arms.
He promised a major crackdown on gun smuggling networks and assured that security measures will remain in place and continue to grow.
Minister LaRoda stated the government will make borders safer and provide police officials with innovative resources and more authority to obtain intelligence for apprehending illegal firearms.
This year's training exercises are scheduled to conclude on the evening of Friday, August 27, 2026.
