Cary, NC - Two initiatives launching this month will enhance safety, strengthen planning, and elevate the experience along Cary's greenways without disrupting public access. Now through mid-April, a new placemaking and safety project will introduce artistic centerline striping in strategic locations along the Black Creek and White Oak greenways, including along curves and approaching underpasses. The striping will improve visibility for trail users while also creating a distinctive visual identity for this signature greenway corridor. Work will take place along sections of the trail and may require temporary lane closures, but greenways will remain open and accessible throughout the project. Black Creek and White Oak Creek greenways were selected for this work because together they form the backbone of Cary's more than 100-mile greenway system and portions of each are some of the most well-used segments.

"Cary's greenways are an essential part of daily life for many residents, whether they're walking, biking, or simply enjoying the outdoors," said Cassie Shumacher-Georgopoulos, Director of Transportation. "By installing thoughtful design elements, we can continue improving safety and ensure our greenway system meets the community's needs."

During this same time period, Cary will expand its use of eco-counters and install 10 additional devices along the move heavily used greenways. The Eco-Counters provide valuable insights into how Cary's greenways are used throughout the year, and the data helps staff better understand peak usage times, travel patterns, and overall demand along key trail corridors. These low-profile devices count pedestrians and bicyclists and track the direction of travel. Some counters also categorize bicycle speeds. The devices do not capture images or collect personally identifiable information. Devices are designed to blend into the natural environment and operate as long-term infrastructure. Cary started using trail counters in 2019 to build consistent year-over-year data. All collected data is available on Cary's Open Data Portal.
