Ways to Celebrate Earth Day 2025

UNION CITY, CA, March 21, 2025 - Calling all students! Now is your chance to shine! Union City will be accepting submissions to the Annual Recycling Poster Contest until Monday, March 24. All K-12 students living or attending school in Union City are invited to participate.

Contest Theme: Follow the 5 R's

Participants are encouraged to depict creative ways to practice the 5 R's: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. Students may also depict other creative actions to minimize waste generation. Union City encourages all eligible students to participate and showcase creativity while promoting environmental sustainability.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to all K-12 students living in or attending school in Union City; one entry per student.
  • Poster Size: Minimum 8.5 x 11 inches; maximum 11 x 17 inches.
  • Medium: All traditional art mediums are accepted, including markers, crayons, watercolors, and colored pencils. Digital art submissions are not permitted.
  • Originality: Submissions must be original works created solely by the student.
  • Entry Form: A completed Official Entry Form must accompany each poster. Forms can be downloaded here and are also available at City Hall, Holly Community Center, and Kennedy Community Center.

Submission Deadline: Entries will be accepted until Monday, March 24, 2025, at 5:00 PM.

Submission Locations:

  • City Hall: 34009 Alvarado-Niles Road
  • Holly Community Center: 31600 Alvarado Boulevard
  • Kennedy Community Center: 1333 Decoto Road

Judging and Prizes:

Entries will be evaluated based on creativity, imagination, and the ability to inspire others to "Rethink Before You Toss." Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Kindergarten - Grade 2
  • Grades 3-5
  • Grades 6-8
  • Grades 9-12

Each category will have first ($50), second ($30), and third ($15) place prizes.

Recognition:

Contest winners will be recognized by the City Council on Earth Day (April 22, 2025). Winning posters will be featured in the Union City Community and Recreation Services Activity Guide, displayed on the City website, and showcased within the community.

Get your garden blooming this spring with FREE compost from the Union City Compost Hub! Grab your shovel and container and head to 35700 Alvarado-Niles Rd to pick up nutrient-rich compost for your home garden. Give your plants the boost they need while keeping our community green and sustainable!

Help Keep Union City Parks Clean & Beautiful!

Join us for a community park cleanup and make a difference in keeping Union City's parks fresh and beautiful! We're inviting families, friends, and neighbors to volunteer a few hours of their time to help clean up Arroyo Park.

  • Time: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
  • Location: Arroyo Park - 35199 Perry Road

Open to All! (Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.) All equipment and supplies will be provided - just bring your energy and community spirit! Pre-registration is encouraged.

Free E-Waste Dropoff Event

Recycle e-waste safely and responsibly for FREE! Union City residents are invited to drop off e-waste items at the James Logan High School parking lot located at 1800 H St between 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 12. For more information visit www.tri-ced.org.
