CEB and SGH Warsaw School of Economics strengthen partnership with €25.8 million loan for campus modernisation

Warsaw - The Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) and the SGH Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) have signed a €25.8 million loan agreement to support the second phase of the university's transformation, reinforcing their shared commitment to academic excellence, innovation and inclusion. The new financing brings the CEB's total support for SGH to more than €40 million since 2021.

CEB financing builds on the successful completion of the first phase of the programme, which delivered the Hub of Innovation - a landmark facility that expanded teaching capacity, fostered collaboration and innovation, and created more accessible and sustainable learning environments for students and staff.

The new loan will support the refurbishment of a historic campus building, improving safety, accessibility and energy performance while preserving its architectural heritage. It will also finance the SGH Park Pavilion, a multi-purpose building with flexible interior spaces, an exhibition area, and facilities for academic, cultural, and student-related activities.

Together, these investments are helping SGH adapt its learning environment to the evolving needs of students, researchers and educators, while expanding access to high-quality higher education.

"Education is one of the most powerful drivers of equal opportunity and social progress," said CEB Governor Carlo Monticelli. "Building on the success of the Hub of Innovation, this new investment project will help the Warsaw School of Economics strengthen an inclusive learning environment, equipping future generations with the skills they need to thrive in the global arena."

Dr Marcin Dąbrowski, Chancellor of the Warsaw School of Economics, said: "SGH is the finest and most renowned business university in Poland. At the same time, for many years our teaching and research infrastructure has fallen far short to meet the needs and aspirations of the academic community. Our bold and large-scale investments over the last five years have only been feasible thanks to the commitment of the strong and reliable financial partner which shares our values. With such an outstanding Partner as CEB, we proudly look to the future, providing our students, PhD candidates and faculty with a new, high-quality academic environment."

Founded in 1906, SGH is Poland's oldest public university specialising in economics and business. The university trains more than 15 000 students per year and cooperates with around 350 universities in over 75 countries.

The project forms part of the CEB's broader engagement in Poland. Since the country joined the Bank in 1998, it has financed 80 projects with a strong social impact, totalling more than €8 billion, including in education, MSME financing, health and social care, local and regional development and natural disaster resilience.
