Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon announced today that the 35-year-old Schenectady man who was the lone suspect in the Jan. 30 shooting death of DeWitt Miller on Central Avenue has admitted his guilt.
Leonardo Guzman pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree in front of the Honorable Roger McDonough Monday. As part of the plea bargain, Guzman, a predicate felon, will face a 20-year determinate state prison sentence followed by five years of post-release supervision when he is sentenced on Sept. 12.
Albany Police responded to reports of a shooting at 396 Central Ave. just after 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 and found Miller, 30, suffering extensive blood loss from a gunshot wound to the groin. He was taken to Albany Medical Center and died later that evening.
Albany Police located Guzman a short time after the incident and arrested him after questioning. It was Albany's first murder of the year.
Guzman's girlfriend Talesha Wynn, 43, also pleaded guilty on Monday to Attempted Tampering with Physical Evidence and will face a three-year probation term. Wynn admitted to McDonough that she tried to wash a jacket Guzman was wearing at the time of the shooting.
District Attorney Lee Kindlon and Assistant District Attorney Stephen Lydon are prosecuting the case.
