Biomedical Engineering Professor Celebrated as a Woman of Distinction

Wei Yin

Wei Yin, professor of biomedical engineering at Stony Brook University and associate dean for community engagement and outreach, was honored at the Women of Distinction Celebration, held by Assembly District Four at the New Village Recreation Center in Centereach on March 21.

State Assemblywoman for the Fourth District, Rebecca Kassay, presented Yin with the citation.

Yin was honored in the category of science for her leadership in biomedical engineering, her commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and her mentorship of future leaders in the field. Her work advances the understanding of cardiovascular disease and medical technologies through innovative engineering and computational modeling.

Through collaborative research with fellow scientists and clinicians at Stony Brook University Hospital, she applies engineering solutions to real-world clinical challenges, contributing advancements in areas such as coronary heart disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms and life support technologies including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation devices.

In addition to her research, Yin is a dedicated educator and mentor, teaching courses such as emergent bio design and leading senior design programs that provide students with hands-on experience addressing real clinical problems, preparing the next generation of engineers and innovators.

The event, which included remarks from elected officials and the presentation of the proclamations, celebrates the leadership, service and inspiration of women who make a meaningful difference every day through their dedication, passion and impact, and is held during Women's History Month. Yin was the only recipient in the category of science. The other categories included: business, community volunteer, education, government, healthcare, law enforcement and emergency responder and non-profit.

"The stories shared at the event about the incredible women in our district were inspiring. For me, it was a humbling experience. It motivates me to keep working hard, to give back, to support our community, and to promote greater awareness, education, and innovation in health science research," Yin said.

Yin earned her BE from Tianjin University, her MS from the University of Akron, and her PhD from Stony Brook University, all in biomedical engineering.
