New closures, traffic pattern changes scheduled in east-central Georgia

Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation and its construction contractors have scheduled multiple new closures and traffic pattern changes to be implemented in the coming weeks in east-central Georgia.

[Link]In Laurens County, the traffic pattern will change on US Route 441/US Route 319/State Route 31, just south of Dublin and Interstate 16, between Pinehill Road and Scotland Road on Wednesday, July 23 as part of a project to widen the route to a four-lane divided highway. The contractor plans to reduce the existing four-lane roadway to two lanes. They will begin by closing the left lanes in the northbound and southbound directions. This will allow crews to remove existing pavement markings and apply new striping to redirect north and southbound undivided traffic to the current southbound lanes. Additionally, traffic will be shifted onto a new curve being constructed south of Scotland Rd. and Springhaven Road. This new traffic pattern will allow construction activities to proceed in the area currently occupied by the northbound lanes of US 441/US 319/SR 31.

In Jefferson County, State Route 171 will close to through traffic between State Route 540/The Fall Line Freeway and US Route 221/State Route 24 from Monday, July 28 until Thursday, July 31. A pipe crossing repair has been scheduled at the intersection of SR 171 and US 221/SR 24, west of Louisville. Signs and message boards will be installed to warn drivers of the closure. Detour: SR 540 east to SR 296, SR 296 south to US 221, follow US 221 through Louisville.

In Richmond County, daytime lane closures will be implemented on US Route 1/State Route 4 between Tobacco Road and South Prong Creek from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Wednesday, July 23 as part of a project to resurface the route. The contractor has completed paving operations after utilizing overnight lane closures. In the coming weeks, crews will build shoulders to bring the grade of the dirt up to the level of the new asphalt. New permanent striping and reflective pavement markings will also be installed. The left and right lanes are both subject to closure, one at a time, depending on where work is taking place. This is anticipated to take up to three weeks, weather permitting.

Please note, schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, reduce their speed, stay alert, and watch for workers while navigating work zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
