Columbia Fire Department responds to residential structure fire, Jan. 24

On Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1:23 a.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) units were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1300 block of Vandiver Drive.

While en route, firefighters reported a heavy smoke column visible from several miles away and Boone County Joint Communications reported multiple 911 calls regarding the fire. Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find heavy smoke and fire emanating from a two-story residential structure. Firefighters entered the home under heavy fire conditions to search for victims while simultaneously stretching handlines to control the fire. The heavy fire conditions encountered by initial firefighters had already weakened the structure's integrity and created unsafe conditions in the flooring and roof components.

A primary search by ladder companies was conducted quickly from multiple windows and access points and no victims were found in the accessible bedrooms. Due to several large holes in the floor, lack of drywall in the ceiling and walls and increasingly worsening fire conditions, the incident commander removed firefighters from the structure and the scene transitioned to a defensive operation. The change required firefighters to establish a second water supply and place four additional handlines around the structure to combat the flames and control their spread.

The fire was under control within approximately 40 minutes despite austere weather conditions and ice forming on ladders, hoses and personnel. A property representative arrived at the scene and reported the structure was vacant and secured. One occupant, who identified himself as a resident of the structure, stated five adults were seeking refuge in the residence at the time of the fire and had all escaped.

A total of 10 CFD units with 20 personnel responded to this incident. There were no reported injuries.

Columbia Fire Marshals and Columbia Police are investigating the fire. A Fire Department presence will remain throughout the morning. The Columbia Fire Department asks motorists to avoid traveling through this area if possible due to the ice accumulation and firefighters working throughout the morning.
