Lincoln University of Missouri's Explorer Post 6265 was officially chartered during the Jefferson City Council meeting on Sept. 21, establishing a new opportunity for youth to explore careers in public safety and emergency management.
Lincoln University, through the university's Security Sciences Institute, is the sponsoring organization for the Scouting America Explorer Post, which was developed through a partnership with Scouting America and supported by community partners, including the Jefferson City Police Department, Jefferson City Fire Department, Cole County Emergency Medical Services and the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
The Explorer Post provides youth with opportunities for hands-on learning, mentorship and career exploration in public safety fields, including law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services and emergency management.
Initial approval for the program was granted by the Jefferson City Council last fall. Following completion of the chartering process, Scouting America officially issued the charter for Explorer Post 6265.
Through partnerships with local agencies, participants will have opportunities to gain practical experience while learning about careers in public service. Experiences may include department tours and ride-alongs, emergency response simulations, first aid and CPR training, an introduction to criminal law and court procedures, fire and rescue operations, and team-building and leadership development.
The Explorer Post also complements Lincoln University's efforts to expand education, training and certification opportunities in emergency services, including the Lincoln University Law Enforcement Training Academy and Emergency Medical Technician certificate program.
Youth interested in learning more about Explorer Post 6265 can attend informational meetings held the first and third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the JCFD Training Center, 2304 Hyde Park Rd.
