The nation's leading civil rights organization, Black leaders & community members will convene in Chicago, July 18-22

CHICAGO - NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson was joined by local and National NAACP leaders and other Chicago stakeholders for a press conference to preview the upcoming 117th National Convention in Chicago.

As the country celebrates its 250th anniversary next month, the Convention will take place from July 18, 2026, to July 22, 2026, and will focus on the theme 'We the People,' which embodies the spirit of unity and collective action for social justice, urging everyone to remember their collective power in the fight against discrimination.

Political leaders and celebrities will attend the NAACP's convention, and names will be announced in the coming weeks. All members of the media are provided with complimentary access to convention programming. If interested, please fill out this form.

NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson shared the following statement, emphasizing the importance of the National NAACP's presence in Chicago:

"As we gather in Chicago under the theme 'We, the People,' we're reminded that our power has always come from our collective voice and our willingness to fight for a more just future," said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. "We're witnessing coordinated attacks on voting rights and civil rights by those in positions of power, trying to take us back. But we will fight to protect and expand the protections we need and deserve. The NAACP Convention has always been where we mobilize, organize, and prepare to meet these challenges head-on. This November, we will channel that power at the ballot box and continue the work of building a more equitable and inclusive democracy for all."

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson offered the following comments:

"Illinois is proud to welcome the NAACP and thousands of its members, allies, and leaders to Chicago," said Governor JB Pritzker. "At a moment when the right to vote and the promise of equal representation are under attack, the NAACP's courage and leadership has never been more important. The theme 'We, the People' is a reminder that our democracy only lives up to its promise when every voice is heard, especially those that have been systematically silenced, and Illinois stands with the NAACP in that fight."

"Chicago has always been a city that answers the call when democracy is on the line, and we are proud to welcome the NAACP and its Convention to our city," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "As we mark 250 years of American democracy, there is no more fitting place than Chicago - a city built by the hands and voices of Black Americans - to recommit to the fight for fair representation, voting rights, and equal justice. The NAACP's work is Chicago's work, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with every activist, organizer, and change-maker who will fill our city this summer."

Leon W. Russell, Chair of the NAACP Board of Directors, and Convention Committee Chairman Michael Turner, and Theodis Pace, President of the Illinois State Conference, previewed what attendees can expect next month, and NAACP National Youth & College Director Tylik McMillian, overviewed his division's day of service project in the city. Kristen Reynolds, Choose Chicago CEO, a pivotal partner that helped bring the 117th NAACP National Convention, also gave remarks at the press conference.
