Minister David Songulashvili Gets Familiar with the Disaster Recovery and Preventive Works in Telavi

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr David Songulashvili, along with the Minister of Infrastructure, Mr Revaz Sokhadze, the State Representative in the Kakheti Region, Mr Platon Kalmakhelidze, and representatives of the relevant government agencies, visited the city of Telavi to review the ongoing recovery and preventive works following the natural disaster that struck the city on 12 July.

"Cleanup operations in Telavi are progressing intensively. From the very first day of the disaster, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture has been fully engaged in the response, working in close coordination with both local and central authorities to implement all necessary measures promptly. For the Government, ensuring a swift emergency response and the coordinated, effective action of all responsible agencies in addressing such challenges remains a top priority," Minister David Songulashvili stated.

In the early hours of July 12, heavy rainfall caused the Telavi Gorge River to overflow its banks, triggering a mudflow that flooded several streets across the city. According to data from the meteorological stations of the National Environmental Agency of Georgia, precipitation in Telavi reached 57.3 mm, representing 85% of the area's average monthly rainfall.

To assess the impact of the disaster, teams of geologists and hydrologists from the National Environmental Agency were deployed to the site from the very first day. Based on their field assessments, the specialists prepared a technical report containing recommendations for further action.

The Road Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure is carrying out intensive works to clear roads, clean the channel of the Telavi Gorge River, and remove debris from sediment-retention structures (check dams). Additional preventive measures include the installation of soil-filled gabion bank protection structures and other engineering works designed to provide the highest possible level of protection for the city against future natural hazards.
