San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB) West Span Paint Project Begins Tuesday April 7, 2026

Published: Mar 23, 2026

Overnight lane reductions set for Sunday - Friday, 12:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m.

Oakland/San Francisco - Caltrans is beginning a project to repaint the west span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB) on Tuesday, April 7, as part of ongoing preservation work on the west span. This paint work is part of Caltrans' long-term effort to preserve bridge steel components, extend structure life, and improve corrosion protection. The SFOBB paint project is part of ongoing west-span rehabilitation efforts which includes the west span joint rehabilitation effort currently underway. This project is expected to be completed by Spring 2031.

What to Expect
During the project, travelers should expect overnight lane closures, consistent with standard SFOBB construction practice-typically 1-3 lane closures between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. These lane windows and patterns are also used for other west-span construction work, including joint rehabilitation and cable-related activities.

Work will not require full bridge closures. Crews will set up protective containment around work areas, which may shift along portions of the west span as progress continues.

Traffic Impacts
Drivers should anticipate:

  • Overnight delays due to reduced lane capacity
  • Slower traffic flow near active work zones
  • Possible temporary noise and construction lighting during overnight hours
  • Occasional ramp or shoulder closures, as required for equipment access

Schedule

  • Work Begins: Tuesday, April 7
  • Work Hours: Overnight (12:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m.), Sunday night through Friday morning
  • Duration: Multi-month effort; schedule subject to weather conditions
