Serbia firmly committed to continuous strengthening, promotion of human rights

State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nevena Jovanović met on the sidelines of the 61st session of the High-Level Segment of the Human Rights Council in Geneva with UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif.

Current issues in the field of protection and promotion of human rights were discussed, as well as the challenges facing the multilateral system in contemporary international circumstances.

The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasised that the current global context is challenging for multilateralism, but that the present optimism and constructive atmosphere marking the 61st session is encouraging, underlining that this is a moment for increased solidarity and joint action.

Jovanović highlighted her strong support for the work of the Human Rights Council, as well as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasising that Serbia, as a candidate country for membership in the European Union, is firmly committed to the continuous strengthening and improvement of human rights, in accordance with the highest international standards.

The State Secretary also pointed out that the Republic of Serbia counts on an active international presence when it comes to protecting the rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, emphasising the importance of consistent application of international norms and continued dialogue as key mechanisms for improving the position and security of the Serb population in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
