WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Finance Committee, announced that federal grants to help upgrade crucial infrastructure for four communities across Washington state were included in the final version of the bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. President Donald Trump signed the funding bill into law last week, after House Republicans finally agreed to pass the bill, nearly a month after the Senate passed it unanimously.
"After a month, House Republicans finally agreed to the DHS funding bill the Senate passed. I'm glad the good work being done at the Coast Guard, TSA, FEMA, and other agencies will be funded again," Sen. Cantwell said.
In total, Sen. Cantwell helped secure $5,368,288 for infrastructure in the State of Washington.
Descriptions of each grant are below.
Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District will receive $1,125,000 for the Well 9 Seismic Resiliency Water Transmission Main Design project. This project will design a redundant water transmission, allowing the water district to continue to deliver water to customers in the event of a catastrophic seismic event.
Yakima Valley Emergency Management will receive $1,953,000 to establish and construct an Emergency Operation Center in Yakima County. U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA-04) also supported the project.
The City of Seattle will receive $1,145,144 to plan for the second phase of replacing the Seattle Waterfront Elliot Bay Seawall, a vulnerable seawall in downtown Seattle. U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA-07) also supported the project.
Cowlitz County PUD will receive $1,145,144 for the Northwest Service Area Grid Resilience project, to relocate and put underground electric distribution lines in the Ryderwood area. U.S. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA-03) also supported the project.
